Mark Schatz, FAIA, and Anne Eamon, Assoc. AIA, established our architect-led design/
build firm in 2004, and we focus on advancing the presence and influence of
the profession of architecture by producing uncompromising, yet broadly accessible residential design
work. In addition, we have been a proponent and advocate for the small
house, bringing early, broad public awareness to what has later on become a popular
building and lifestyle movement. We live by example on this issue, being a husband-wife team, having
designed and built two personal houses, the first at 700 square feet, and the
current at 990 square feet for our family, which has grown to a family of five, plus a
dachsund, Miles, and tortie cat, Lola.
Our small house work piqued the interest of the press as early as 2002, and
was featured nationally in Dwell in 2005 and multiple prime time HGTV shows
focused on architecturally inventive small house design. Our current house was
featured on a 2016 Houzz TV segment (viewed more than 700,000 times) and in
consumer and professional media outlets in several languages, including the
Houston Chronicle, the San Francisco Chronicle, and Cite Magazine.
Our firm currently builds around three out of every four projects we
design. Our process-based and exploratory design solutions range
from furniture and domestic-scale projects to small commercial buildings
and interiors. Our design work is client- centered, hands-on, and
research-driven. Many projects experiment with materials and
fabrication technologies, integrating artistic intent and construction
systems, allowing for project specific design solutions to fit within budgetary
constraints and individual client goals. Sustainable design strategies and materials are
the assumed basis of the design process for all projects. Pursuing
architect-led design-build has allowed bypassing the inertia of the typical
construction process, letting m+a serve a broader client base with ongoing
experimentation and design development work.
Our professional outreach includes representing AIA Houston for career day at
local schools, as well participation in an annual summer program that brings as
many as 80 high school students considering the profession to tour our
projects. We also give regular tours of current in construction work to students from both the
University of Houston and Rice University. For several years
we both taught design studios at the University of Houston
where we still frequently guest lecture and participate in design juries. Our
lectures have ranged from design-build study, introduction to architecture,
structures, and practice. Mark has presented at the Texas Society of
Architects convention Five times and is past chair of the AIA Houston
Residential and Homes Tour committees.
Our design work has earned awards for residential, commercial,
and theoretical design projects including five AIA Houston Awards. Ten
projects have been included on the AIA Houston Home Tour and
two projects are featured in the Taunton Press publication A Little House in
the City. Their firm was named AIA Houston Firm of the Year in 2014
(cited for design excellence and innovation in residential design), and Mark
is the recipient of both the 2013 Texas Society of Architects Caudill
Award for Young Professional Achievement and the 2011 AIA Houston
Ben Brewer Young Architect Award, in recognition of his artistic and
innovative approach to design. Mark was recently elevated to the
AIA College of Fellows, and is now distinguished by the FAIA designation,
as recognition of notable contributions to the advancement of the
profession of architecture.
